About Us

CIRCULAR ECONOMY FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND

(FORMERLY THE COMMITTEE FOR WASTE REDUCTION)

REFUSE, REDUCE. REUSE. RECYCLE. REGENERATE.

OUR STORY

As a group, we were established in early 2017 and through that time we contributed to the Zero Plastic local and state conversations.   We also created the foundation version of the Waste Map to identify locations that were taking sorted waste.

We were formed to create a place for many organisations and groups to have a central place to come together and share their knowledge for a common goal – the environment.

We are proud to say we are building a diverse membership of businesses, community groups and academics all sharing knowledge to deliver customised solutions of how to reduce waste in the workplace, daily life, schools and events.

Our Circular Economy goals are to help with decontaminating waste through Case Studies from our Pilots to prove systems and innovations that help change habits in the workplace which will then ripple out to the home, while creating new industries, jobs and entrepreneurship in our region.

We are A/B testing a roadmap to a Circular Economy.

Our 8 Year Roadmap To 2030

We are building a Circular Case Studies that test and uses the Human Centred Design principle to find a scaleable, shareable solution to the key wastes that can be resources for the Circular Entrepreneurs that we are supporting through our data-driven Pilots.  We are supporting behavioural change by working with a few we think are super cool

To change policies we need data and Case Studies are a way to speak politics and investment as we validate the changes we propose through test pilots we run through our two main Campaigns each year.

Circular Citizen Challenge every year we will pick a month to bring everyone with us as we do the work in the business world the Community element is just as important.  In fact bringing and developing community is key to the roadmap being adopted locally and regionally.   Find Out More

Circular Business Model Transition Pilot is a 24month program where we test commercial solutions to Food Waste in our region so we can help MUDs and Tourism industry to have a closed loop solution to food waste while become SDG certified.   Bringing the innovation out of JCU and other Australian Circular Innovators is the key goal to our Pilots as this will become our consultation service that will be supported with a Sustainability Report + Carbon Measurement Report for businesses.

In 2023 onwards, the lessons from our Pilot will provide the framework to take businesses whether they have been through ecoBiz or not to start using our local Sustainability Officer In Your Pocket app - Green KPI. If you would like to apply for this consult service, please reach out to us as we are taking on waitlist clients for late 2023.

The Opportunity Ahead

Every 10 tonne we divert from landfill creates 9.2 jobs.  It's on the waste levy doc for Australia if you want to google and read that.

Key factors are that we as consumers need to recognise waste as a resource and create demand and value in the market of recyclables. Make no mistake recycling is not an excuse to keep using single-use items. We still need to reduce our love of disposable items, but we are talking pure materials that can continue to be used multiple times as opposed to continually using finite resources at an unsustainable rate.

Our aim is to continue to connect people that can give you the tools to raise awareness in this matter and to implement changes one step at a time.

We see the need to reduce not only single-use items but also recognise the power that we as consumers have to influence change by choosing where we spend our dollars and the questions that we ask our local councils and local members.

Our newsletter, you can subscribe below, will cover a range of insightful pieces by regular contributors including legislation coming in and what it means to you - the changes to the Waste Levy, Carbon Measurement Apps, apps we are road testing, what are the in demand careers to study in FNQ and how to collaborate with us on existing and new Pilots. We will keep you up to date on what’s happening in our region in the Circular Economy transition.
